Ukrainian artists and their students have showcased their work at “Reflections: Discovering History Through Art” at Cavan Central Library. The exhibition celebrates Ukrainian creativity and highlights the positive contribution of the Ukrainian community to cultural life in County Cavan, Ireland.
On 10 October 2026, Cavan Central Library hosted the official opening of “Reflections: Discovering History Through Art”, an exhibition featuring works by Ukrainian professional artists and their students from Cavan and Belturbet.
Bringing together different cultural perspectives and personal experiences, the exhibition explores the places we call home and the stories, heritage and human connections that shape our sense of belonging. Through art, participants share their perspectives and build bridges between Ukrainian and Irish communities.
Ukrainian Artists Enriching Cultural Life in Cavan
The Association of Ukrainians in the Republic of Ireland (AURI) warmly congratulates everyone involved and extends its sincere appreciation to the women whose dedication helped make the exhibition possible:
Liudmyla Vechirko, professional artist and leader of the Cavan art group.
Irena Yesakova, artist and volunteer who has led and supported the Belturbet art group.
Olga Dowd, exhibition organiser, recognised for her initiative, commitment and valuable contribution to bringing communities together through creativity.
Their work demonstrates how art, education and volunteering can bring people together, nurture talent and create opportunities for cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
Ukraine and Ireland: A Shared Story Through Art
Speaking at the exhibition opening, Sergiy Balan, Chairperson of the Association of Ukrainians in the Republic of Ireland, highlighted the growing cultural connections between the two countries:
“Ukrainians have become part of Ireland’s cultural life, and Ireland has become part of Ukraine’s history. Together, we are creating a shared story of friendship, solidarity, mutual respect and cultural enrichment.”
The “Reflections” exhibition is another inspiring example of the contribution Ukrainians are making to Irish society. Ukrainian cultural festivals, musical performances, art exhibitions, educational initiatives and Ukrainian literature projects all play an important role in preserving cultural identity while enriching local communities.
AURI is proud of Ukrainian artists, educators and volunteers who share Ukraine’s culture with Irish audiences through their talent, professionalism and community involvement.
The Association also extends its heartfelt thanks to the local Irish community, Cavan’s cultural and community partners, and everyone who continues to welcome and support Ukrainian initiatives and strengthen the bonds between communities.

Integration is about more than finding a new home. It is about belonging, contributing to society and creating something meaningful together.
